The Kabul Tribune (KT)—The Taliban’s Supreme Court said a man in Uruzgan province was flogged for allegedly insulting and disrespecting his father. In a statement Saturday, the court said a primary court in the province had sentenced the man to 30 lashes and five months in prison. The punishment was carried out after the Supreme Court approved the ruling.
The announcement came the same day eight other people were
flogged in Parwan province.
The floggings are part of a broader pattern of corporal
punishment the Taliban have carried out across Afghanistan over the past four
years. The U.N. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in
Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, has condemned the increasing use of public
floggings and warned that no refugees should be forcibly returned to
Afghanistan under such conditions.
Human rights groups and the international community have
repeatedly criticized the Taliban’s use of such punishments.
