The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A U.N. expert has condemned a deadly attack on members of a Shia community in western Afghanistan, calling for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
Richard Bennett, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the
situation of human rights in Afghanistan, said a gunmen assault in Injil
District of Herat province left multiple civilians dead and injured.
Bennett said the attack “appears to fit a pattern” of
violence targeting minority communities and stressed that it must be
independently investigated, with perpetrators brought to justice.
He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and
wished a swift recovery for those injured.
The death toll from an attack on civilians in western
Afghanistan has risen to 11, local Taliban officials said Saturday.
Seven wounded victims died from their injuries at Herat
Regional Hospital, according to Ahmadullah Muttaqi, the Taliban’s head of
information and culture in Herat, as cited by the state-run Bakhtar News Agency.
Eight other injured people remain hospitalized, with some
reported to be in critical condition, he said.
Taliban authorities said an investigation into the attack is
underway and that security forces have arrested one suspect in connection with
the incident.
Officials added that those responsible would be identified
and brought to justice, vowing no leniency for perpetrators involved in the
killing of civilians.
