The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Humanitarian organizations have begun delivering urgently needed assistance to communities in eastern Nuristan Province after weeks of inaccessibility caused by ongoing armed conflict, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.
The operation, coordinated by the International Committee of
the Red Cross, the Afghan Red Crescent Society and the World Food Programme,
targets areas in Kamdesh District and Barg-e-Matal District, where residents
have lacked access to food, health care and essential services for more than
six weeks.
Aid groups estimate that about 136,000 people, or roughly
17,000 households, have faced severe shortages of basic necessities over the
past two months due to insecurity and restricted access.
Since early April 2026, humanitarian organizations have held
sustained discussions with all parties to the conflict to secure safe and
unimpeded access to affected communities.
Following those efforts, deliveries of food, medical
supplies and other essential relief items have now begun, with initial
assistance focusing on the most urgent needs.
Aid agencies also said that with the reopening of roads to
Nuristan, local markets are gradually being restocked and medical evacuations
have resumed.
Humanitarian organizations continue to work with community
representatives to ensure aid aligns with the most pressing needs, particularly
in food security, health care and essential services.
They reiterated their commitment to neutrality, independence
and impartiality, calling on all parties to support safe and sustained
humanitarian access to vulnerable populations.
