The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Richard Bennett said in a post on the social media
platform X that reports of the European Union hosting Taliban officials to
discuss the deportation of Afghan nationals are “seriously concerning.”
He warned that any forced return of Afghans could violate the principle of
non-refoulement, which prohibits sending individuals back to countries where
they may face serious harm.
Bennett pointed to widespread human rights concerns in Afghanistan,
including restrictions affecting women, as well as risks faced by human rights
defenders and former government employees.
He emphasized that deportations under current conditions could expose
returnees to significant danger and urged caution in any policy decisions
regarding Afghan migrants.
