The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s acting representative to the United Nations, said at a UN Security Council meeting that Taliban governance lacks accountability and primarily serves the group’s own interests.

Faiq criticized the Taliban’s performance, saying the group has failed to respond to the needs and demands of the Afghan people and has been unable to manage the country’s ongoing crises.

He said corruption, abuse of power and the concentration of wealth within a limited circle in the Taliban structure have been widely documented.

According to Faiq, Afghanistan’s mineral resources are being extracted without transparency or public oversight, while the Taliban continue to ignore public demands and repeated calls from the international community.

He stressed that nearly five years after the Taliban’s return to power, Afghanistan continues to face political, economic, social and humanitarian crises, with conditions not improving but instead becoming increasingly fragile.

Faiq added that millions of Afghans remain dependent on humanitarian assistance, while poverty, unemployment and shrinking economic opportunities have cast serious uncertainty over the future of the country’s youth.

He also identified the exclusion of women and young people from public life as a key factor worsening the humanitarian crisis, saying restrictions on women and girls are part of a systematic effort to remove half of society from the public sphere.

Faiq said such policies are inconsistent with Islamic principles and Afghanistan’s history and traditions.

He warned that denying women access to education, employment and social participation has had severe consequences, leading many young people and women to see no future for themselves in the country.

Faiq concluded by urging members of the Security Council to adopt a stronger, more unified and coordinated approach toward Afghanistan, emphasizing that without respect for human rights, women’s rights, inclusive governance and adherence to international commitments, Afghanistan cannot gain legitimacy or reintegrate into the international community.
