The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Washington Times reported that Donald Trump has signed a preliminary agreement with Iran, saying it would curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and prevent a potential economic crisis.
Speaking at a press conference following the G7 summit,
Trump said the initial agreement would help end hostilities in the Middle East
and pave the way for a final deal on Iran’s nuclear program within 60 days.
He said the agreement ensures that Iran will not receive
economic benefits unless it complies with its commitments, including reaffirming
that it will not develop nuclear weapons.
“We’re going to bomb the hell out of them if they violate
the agreement,” Trump said, warning of a severe response in case of
non-compliance.
According to the report, the memorandum of understanding
outlines an end to conflict “on all fronts,” including Lebanon, and includes
provisions for lifting sanctions and allowing Iran to resume oil exports under
specific conditions.
Trump said the United States would not directly fund Iran’s
reconstruction, but that a broader international financing mechanism could
support economic development efforts.
The agreement, signed electronically between Trump and
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, also includes provisions to reopen
maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and reduce tensions affecting
global energy markets.
U.S. officials said the deal is performance-based, meaning
Iran will only receive economic relief if it adheres to the terms.
The report said negotiations on Iran’s nuclear capabilities
and uranium enrichment are expected to continue in Switzerland, with a final
agreement anticipated within two months.
The development has drawn mixed reactions, with some critics
arguing the deal offers concessions to Iran, while others say it could create
an opportunity to reduce conflict and stabilize the region.
Trump said the agreement represents a “very strong deal” and
expressed confidence that it would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
