The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said it is working with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy to support Afghan women by creating sustainable legal livelihood opportunities.

According to UNODC, the initiative aims to empower Afghan women by helping them transition away from livelihoods linked to opium poppy cultivation and by expanding access to sustainable, licit sources of income.

The agency said women play a vital role in strengthening household economies, improving food security, and building more resilient communities.

The announcement comes as international organizations have increasingly emphasized the need to develop alternative economic opportunities for farmers and families previously dependent on opium poppy cultivation following the Taliban's ban on the crop in Afghanistan.
