The Kabul Tribune (KT) — More than 1,400 Afghan nationals have been released from prisons in Pakistan and returned to Afghanistan this week, the Taliban Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said.

In a statement, the ministry said 1,416 Afghan detainees were freed after being arrested in Pakistan for lacking legal documentation.

According to the statement, the released individuals re-entered Afghanistan through the Chaman–Spin Boldak and Torkham border crossings before being transported to their home provinces.

The Taliban ministry said that 638 Afghan detainees were also released from Pakistani prisons and returned to Afghanistan during the previous week.

Pakistan has accelerated its campaign in recent months to deport undocumented foreign nationals, resulting in the expulsion of thousands of Afghans and the detention of many others for allegedly lacking valid legal documents.

During the ongoing deportation campaign, Afghan detainees have been released regularly from prisons across Pakistan and have returned to Afghanistan through the Chaman–Spin Boldak and Torkham border crossings.
