The Kabul Tribune (KT)— Clashes between the Taliban and anti-Taliban forces continued in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province on Friday, according to local sources.
Sources in Badakhshan told The Kabul Tribune that fighting was ongoing in the Topkhana area of Zebak district after anti-Taliban forces launched attacks on several Taliban checkpoints on Thursday and captured a number of positions.
The sources said the Taliban subsequently launched a large-scale operation to retake the lost positions but had failed to make advances.
According to the sources, the Taliban deployed commandos and reinforcements to the area by helicopter and overland routes as fighting continued on multiple fronts.
The sources said three local Taliban commanders, including Faridullah Wahdat, the commander of one of the Taliban’s border checkpoints, were killed in the clashes. They also reported casualties among the anti-Taliban forces but said the exact number remained unknown.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The reported clashes come days after anti-Taliban forces briefly seized the district administration building, the Taliban police headquarters and the Taliban intelligence office in Yeftal-e Payan district of Badakhshan before withdrawing.
