The Kabul Tribune (KT) — South Korea has contributed $3 million to the United Nations World Food Programme to provide food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable women and children in Afghanistan, the WFP said.

The contribution from South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support assistance for about 24,500 vulnerable women and children across Afghanistan over the next 12 months, according to the WFP.

The agency welcomed the funding as Afghanistan faces a deepening hunger and malnutrition crisis. The WFP estimates that 17.4 million people in the country require urgent food assistance, while 4.9 million women and children are expected to need treatment for malnutrition in 2026.

The WFP has warned that severe funding shortages are forcing it to scale back life-saving food and nutrition programs even as needs continue to rise. In August, the agency said nearly 3.7 million children and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women were projected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year.

South Korea has been a longstanding donor to the WFP’s work in Afghanistan. In December 2024, it provided $5 million to support food assistance, nutrition programs, school meals and livelihood activities in the country.
