The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Uzbekistan and Afghan carrier Kam Air are exploring the possibility of establishing a new international airline based in the eastern Uzbek city of Fergana, according to the Fergana regional administration.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting between Fergana Governor Khayrullo Bozorov and a delegation that included Kam Air Commercial Director Omar Mohammad Suleiman and Timur Khalilov, head of the commercial activities department at Uzbekistan Airports.
The talks reviewed the implementation of agreements reached during a Fergana regional delegation's visit to Afghanistan on July 26-27 and examined prospects for expanding cooperation in civil aviation.
The parties also discussed the infrastructure, aviation services and organizational arrangements needed to establish an international airline in Fergana, the regional administration said.
They agreed to continue work on the initiative and involve specialized organizations and aviation experts as the project moves toward possible implementation. The sides also stressed the importance of meeting international standards.
A new carrier could strengthen Fergana's connections with international destinations and expand passenger and business links between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Improved air connectivity could also support trade, tourism and investment between businesses in Fergana and Afghanistan.
The discussions follow agreements reached during the Uzbek delegation's July visit to Afghanistan, which focused on expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation.
Following the meeting, participants identified further steps and priority areas for cooperation, including continued work on the proposed airline project.
