The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Iranian authorities executed a 29-year-old Afghan prisoner who had lost his mobility after being shot by police during his arrest three years earlier, a human rights group said.

The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said Walijan Noorzai was hanged at dawn Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Rafsanjan Central Prison in Iran's southeastern Kerman province. The group said Noorzai, who was from Afghanistan's Farah province, was executed while seated in a wheelchair.

Noorzai had been sentenced to death on a charge of premeditated murder, according to Hengaw.

The rights group, citing informed sources, said Iranian authorities had pursued Nourzay in Rafsanjan three years earlier in connection with the killing. Police shot and seriously wounded him before his arrest, the group said.

The injuries left him unable to walk, and he spent the following three years in prison using a wheelchair, according to Hengaw. He was later sentenced to death and ultimately hanged while seated in the wheelchair, the group said.

Iranian state media and judiciary-affiliated outlets had not publicly announced the execution as of Sunday.

The Associated Press could not independently verify Hengaw's account. Iranian authorities did not immediately comment publicly on the reported execution.
