The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UNICEF on Thursday urged Afghanistan’s de facto authorities to immediately lift restrictions on girls’ and women’s education, saying millions of Afghan girls continue to be denied access to secondary schooling.
In a post on X, the U.N. children’s agency called on the
authorities to allow all girls and women to return to schools and universities.
UNICEF said more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have
been denied secondary education over the past five years since the de facto
authorities took power.
The agency’s appeal comes as restrictions on girls’ and
women’s education remain in place across Afghanistan. Girls are barred from
attending secondary schools, while women and girls are also prohibited from
attending universities.
UNICEF has repeatedly called for the restrictions to be
reversed, saying access to education is a fundamental right for children and
essential to Afghanistan’s future.
