The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Iran executed four Afghan nationals this week on drug and murder charges, an Iranian human rights group said Tuesday, as executions of Afghans in the country continue to rise.
According to Hengaw Human Rights Organization, the
executions were carried out on Tuesday in the prisons of Taybad and Qazvin. The
four men were identified as Faiz Mohammad Shakhnai, Khalid, Khaliq, and
Mohammad Ebrahimi. They were among six inmates whose death sentences were
implemented that day, the group said.
Hengaw reported that executions of Afghan citizens in Iran
have increased since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
The group said at least 46 Afghans have been executed in Iran during the first
eight months of this year alone.
The Taliban administration has previously urged Iranian
authorities to consider alternative punishments for Afghans sentenced to death,
but Tehran has not responded publicly to those requests.
Iran, one of the world’s top executioners, has long faced
criticism from international rights organizations for its use of the death
penalty, particularly in drug-related cases.
