The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Iran is deporting an average of 2,000 to 3,000 undocumented Afghan migrants every day through the Dogharoon border crossing, a provincial official said, as authorities move to tighten border controls and expand biometric monitoring.
Amirullah Shamghadri, the deputy governor for security and
law enforcement in Razavi Khorasan province, told Iranian media that the number
of unauthorized entries has dropped in areas where border walls have been
built.
He said a new biometric system to record the entry and exit
of Afghan migrants at Dogharoon has been completed and will become operational
next week. The system will allow officials to track the movements of Afghan
migrants across the border and throughout the province in real time, he added.
Shamghadri said the data gathered from the system will help
Iran manage the presence of Afghan migrants more effectively.
The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said more than 2
million Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan between January and the
end of September this year. The agency warned that the pace of returns has
deepened Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, straining already limited resources
and services.
