The Kabul Tribune (KT) — European Union lawmakers will debate the situation in Afghanistan on Tuesday, focusing on support for women and communities hit by a recent earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people, according to Taliban authorities.
Members of the European Parliament will hold discussions
with the European Commission and the Council and are set to vote on a
resolution Thursday.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan in late
August, leaving thousands dead and causing widespread destruction. The Taliban,
which has ruled the country for four years but is only recognized by Russia,
appealed for urgent international aid.
Global recognition and donor support remain limited,
however, as the Taliban has imposed sweeping restrictions on women as well as
ethnic and religious groups. The EU statement said these policies have worsened
Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis.
In one of its latest crackdowns, the Taliban has also
imposed internet and mobile phone blackouts, curtailing the ability of citizens
and businesses to connect inside and outside the country.
