The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Associated Press reported that the Afghan man
accused of fatally shooting West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah
Beckstrom and critically wounding Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe had long struggled
with “dark isolation” and persistent unemployment.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an asylum seeker, experienced years of
erratic behavior, alternating between extended periods of social withdrawal and
sudden, weeks-long cross-country trips.
Emails obtained by the AP
reveal that members of his local community had raised concerns about his mental
well-being, with one advocate contacting a refugee organization over fears he
might be suicidal.
Despite these warnings, the violence that erupted near the
White House on the eve of Thanksgiving shocked neighbors and acquaintances, who
recalled Lakanwal as a devoted father. Investigators continue to probe his
motive for the attack that left Beckstrom dead and Wolfe critically injured.
