The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Militants stormed a security checkpoint in Pakistan’s northwest Kurram district near the Afghan border, killing six soldiers, three police and security sources told Reuters on Tuesday.
The overnight attack, which took place between Monday night and Tuesday morning, occurred as Pakistan and Afghanistan struggle to maintain a fragile truce following deadly border clashes in October, their worst fighting since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021.
According to Reuters, Islamabad has blamed the recent surge in attacks on militants who it says operate from Afghan territory. Kabul has rejected the accusations, saying Pakistan’s security problems are internal.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.
Tensions between the two neighbours have escalated in recent months, with several cross-border skirmishes, including heavy firing last Friday that killed at least five people. Three rounds of peace talks hosted by Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have so far failed to produce a lasting agreement.
The mountainous border region is known to shelter fighters from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or the Pakistani Taliban, who have fought the Pakistani state for nearly 20 years. While TTP shares ideological similarities with the Afghan Taliban, Kabul says it does not have an operational relationship with the group.
