The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on India to stop using water as a “weapon” against Pakistan and to respect international laws and agreements, Pakistani media reported.
According to Dunya News, Dar made the remarks during a
meeting with diplomatic representatives, stressing that violations of river
water treaties, deliberate diversion of water flows and the construction of
projects on western rivers in breach of existing agreements pose a serious
threat to regional peace, stability and the international legal order.
The report said Dar warned that such actions could further
undermine already fragile relations in South Asia.
His comments come amid heightened tensions between India and
Pakistan following clashes and violence in April, which further strained
bilateral ties.
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that
“water and blood cannot flow together,” a position after which India has
restricted water flows to Pakistan over the past several months.
According to the report, India has so far issued no official
response to Pakistan’s recent statements and concerns.
