The Kabul Tribune (KT) — U.S. Congressman Thomas Massie has criticized remarks by President Donald Trump warning Iran against the violent suppression of protesters, saying the United States should not intervene in another country’s internal affairs.

Massie wrote in a post on social media that the United States has “problems at home” and should not waste military resources on internal developments in other countries. He also stressed that any military strike against Iran would require authorization from the U.S. Congress.

“This threat isn’t about freedom of speech in Iran; it’s about the dollar, oil, and Israel,” Massie added.

His comments came after Trump posted a message on his social media platform warning that if Iran “shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters,” the United States would come to their rescue. Trump said Washington was “locked and loaded and ready to go,” according to the post dated early Friday, Jan. 2.

Trump’s remarks have drawn criticism from Iranian officials, who have described them as interference in Iran’s internal affairs, amid ongoing protests in several Iranian cities triggered by rising prices and economic pressures.
