The Kabul Tribune (KT) — NetBlocks, a global internet monitoring organization, says a complete internet shutdown in Iran has continued for more than 180 hours, with no signs of restoration.

In a post on X on Friday, Jan. 16, NetBlocks said there have been no reports of partial or regional internet connectivity in Iran so far, adding that the country remains fully disconnected from the global internet.

Referring to Iran’s 2019 internet blackout, NetBlocks noted that the scale of widespread and violent crackdowns against protesters only became clear after internet access was restored at that time.

The organization warned that the current internet shutdown has now surpassed the duration of the 2019 blackout.

The development comes amid ongoing nationwide protests in Iran that began late last month. As demonstrations expanded, the Iranian government cut internet access from Thursday evening last week, a measure also used during the 2019 protests.
