The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Today, 21 February, is observed as International Mother Language Day.
On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) emphasized the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity for sustainable societies. The day, observed annually on 21 February, was first proposed by Bangladesh and approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference. Since 2000, it has been celebrated worldwide.
UNESCO highlights that multilingual and multicultural societies rely on languages to transmit traditional knowledge, preserve culture, and strengthen community identities. The organization notes that linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened, with many languages at risk of disappearing.
Globally, around 40 percent of people do not have access to education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless, progress in multilingual education—especially in early schooling—is growing, with increasing public recognition of its importance.
This year, UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day programs focus on the role of youth in developing multilingual education. Prior to the day, online events were held where students and young people could engage with experts and peers on promoting linguistic diversity.
UNESCO stresses that education in one’s mother tongue not only improves learning outcomes but also promotes social inclusion and broader community participation. “On this International Mother Language Day, UNESCO is calling for investment in language transmission by placing young people at the heart of the solutions involved,” the organization said. “Because linguistic diversity is a pillar of peace, dignity and inclusion. And no voice should be missing from the story of our humanity.”
