The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban said they have released an American citizen, Dennis Quail, in Kabul on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
According to the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Quail had been detained over alleged violations of Afghan laws but was released
following a request from his family and a decision by the Taliban’s Supreme
Court.
The Taliban said the detainee was handed over to his family
in Kabul, describing the move as a gesture of goodwill and humanitarian
consideration, and expressing hope it would help strengthen trust between
countries.
Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said during a
meeting in Kabul with Zalmay Khalilzad, the United Arab Emirates ambassador,
and the detainee’s family that foreign nationals are not detained for political
purposes, but are released after legal processes are completed.
During the meeting, appreciation was also expressed for the
cooperation of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Meanwhile, the United States has recently emphasized that
remaining American detainees should be released as soon as possible, calling
the issue a key part of its engagement with the Taliban.
