The Kabul Tribune (KT) - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Afghanistan, with support from Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has constructed new check dams in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

UNODC said in a post on X that recent rainfall has already filled the structures, delivering immediate benefits to local communities. The project aims to improve water storage, reduce flooding and soil erosion, and strengthen resilience for licit crop production.

According to the agency, the initiative is also intended to support long-term water management, reduce drought risks, and strengthen agricultural land in the face of climate-related challenges.
