The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UN-Habitat said that 4.2 million people in Afghanistan are expected to require emergency shelter and non-food assistance in 2026, highlighting what it described as an urgent housing crisis in the country.
In a statement shared by UN-Habitat Afghanistan, the agency
said the scale of need underscores the growing pressure on housing and basic
services across Afghanistan, where millions of families remain vulnerable due
to displacement, poverty, and ongoing economic challenges.
The agency said the issue is being discussed at the World
Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) taking place in Baku, where global leaders are debating
housing solutions and urban resilience.
“While the world is discussing housing solutions, Afghan
families are already in urgent need of shelter support,” the statement said,
calling for immediate action to ensure adequate housing for all affected
populations.
UN-Habitat warned that without timely intervention, millions
of Afghans could continue to face inadequate living conditions amid worsening
humanitarian pressures.
