The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UNDP Afghanistan said in a post on X that the Inzergai Check Dam in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar Province is helping improve water access and support local livelihoods.
The project, implemented with support from the Government of
Japan, aims to recharge groundwater and is expected to benefit an estimated 700
to 800 surrounding villages.
According to UNDP, the check dam captures seasonal
floodwater, reduces runoff, and helps restore groundwater levels in
drought-affected areas.
Communities in the region have faced prolonged water
shortages in recent years, with declining rainfall and drying wells severely
affecting agriculture and livelihoods.
UNDP said the initiative is part of broader efforts to
strengthen climate resilience, improve water security, and support rural
communities in southern Afghanistan.
