The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Nai Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan has called on the United Nations and the European Union to intensify efforts to secure the release of detained journalists in Afghanistan through dialogue with the Taliban.

The appeal comes amid recent detentions, including two journalists from TOLOnews—Mansoor Niazi and Imran Danish—as well as Javid Niazi, head of the Pegard News Agency, who were detained by Taliban intelligence in recent days.

According to available information, at least seven journalists are currently in Taliban custody, including Bashir Hatef, Hamid Farhadi, Shakib Nazari, Abuzar Sarem, Javid Niazi, Imran Danish and Mansoor Niazi.

In a statement, Nai said the detention of journalists has become a recurring and near-daily practice by the Taliban. The organization added that around 400 journalists have been detained over the past five years.

According to Nai’s data, Taliban authorities have, on average, detained at least three journalists or media workers every two weeks.
