The Kabul Tribune (KT) — CNN reported that six people were found dead inside a cargo train boxcar in the U.S. border city of Laredo, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
According to officials, the bodies were discovered on Sunday
afternoon inside a Union Pacific train at a rail yard in Laredo, located about
160 miles south of San Antonio. The discovery was made shortly after 3:30 p.m.
local time during a routine inspection of the rail car.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain
unknown. Authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security and state
investigators, are involved in the inquiry alongside local law enforcement.
Officials said it is not yet clear whether heat played a role,
although temperatures in Laredo on Sunday afternoon were reported to be in the
low-to-mid 90s Fahrenheit.
The rail company Union Pacific said it is cooperating fully
with investigators and expressed sadness over the incident.
Police said the bodies were found after an employee at the
rail yard alerted authorities around 3 p.m., and no survivors were discovered
inside the train car.
Officials added that the investigation is in its early
stages, and the identities, immigration status, and ages of the deceased have
not yet been confirmed.
