The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The US Department of State has once again urged its citizens to avoid travel to Afghanistan, renewing its highest-level travel advisory for the country.
In its latest guidance, the department placed Afghanistan alongside Russia, North Korea, and Iran under Level 4 — the most severe travel warning — describing these destinations as “very high risk” for American citizens.
The advisory warned that US nationals traveling to these countries could face risks including “wrongful detention.”
The State Department also advised citizens to carefully review official travel advisories before planning or booking trips abroad in order to better understand potential risks associated with their destinations.
The United States has maintained a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, citing security threats, limited consular services, and risks of detention. Washington has repeatedly emphasized that it has a limited ability to assist US citizens inside Afghanistan, where no formal diplomatic presence currently exists. Similar warnings remain in place for several countries with heightened political tensions and security concerns.
