The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Two children have been killed and a woman seriously injured after an unexploded ordnance detonated in southern Helmand province, Taliban officials said on Wednesday.
A Taliban police spokesperson for Helmand province said the incident took place in Kala Sabz village of Khanshin district at around 9 a.m. local time.
He said the explosion occurred when an unexploded shell was thrown into a fire inside a residential house.
According to officials, the victims were a 10-year-old and a 3-year-old child. The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Afghanistan remains heavily contaminated with unexploded ordnance left from decades of conflict, posing a continuing threat to civilians, particularly children.
Authorities say such incidents frequently occur when people unknowingly handle or disturb unexploded munitions.
