The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A senior Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has announced major decisions to make operations at Hairatan Port fully 24-hour, following a visit to the northern Afghan trade gateway in Balkh.
According to a statement from the Taliban Economic Vice-Presidency, Baradar and his accompanying delegation reviewed plans to expand the port’s capacity through the recruitment of additional government personnel, construction of modern terminals and administrative buildings, establishment of cargo handling and unloading centers, and development of advanced laboratories, roads and cold storage facilities.
The statement also said that decisions were made to expand the railway network, increase transport vehicles, and install mobile scanners and digital weighing systems to prevent smuggling and improve customs efficiency.
Officials said these measures are expected to enable 24-hour operations at the port and significantly increase trade between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
Hairatan Port is one of Afghanistan’s key trade gateways, serving as a major route for commerce with Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries. Authorities have been working in recent years to enhance its capacity and streamline trade flows, which they say is critical for boosting national revenue and economic growth.
