The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Hamid Karzai has called on the Taliban to reopen schools and universities for girls and provide employment opportunities for women and educated professionals, in a message marking Eid al-Adha.

Karzai said Afghanistan is the shared home of all its citizens and stressed that the country’s progress and development depend on unity, access to education, and a sense of national ownership among the population.

In his message, the former president also highlighted the importance of preventing excessive water consumption and protecting underground water resources.

He expressed sympathy with victims of recent floods and cross-border airstrikes and artillery attacks by Pakistan, calling on humanitarian organizations and citizens to continue supporting those affected, including returnees.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, girls above the sixth grade have been barred from attending school. Despite sustained domestic and international pressure, the Taliban have not announced a clear timeline for reopening secondary schools and universities for girls.

International organizations have warned that continued restrictions on girls’ education could have serious psychological and social consequences, including increased risks of early marriage and the loss of future opportunities.
