The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss support for Syria’s economy and recent regional developments, the Syrian presidency said on Sunday.
According to a statement, Sharaa emphasized that lifting the
remaining U.S. sanctions on Syria is essential for reviving the country’s
economy and attracting foreign investment.
The United States has said that while it has dismantled much
of its sanctions regime on Syria and repealed the Caesar Act, some restrictions
remain in place.
Washington noted that sanctions will continue to target
former President Bashar al-Assad, his associates, alleged human rights abusers,
and individuals involved in trafficking captagon, an addictive stimulant.
U.S. officials also said they are reviewing Syria’s
designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, which imposes limits on foreign
assistance, defense exports, and certain financial transactions.
Analysts say the removal of remaining sanctions is critical
to the success of Syria’s new government. Several Saudi companies are
reportedly planning major investments in Syria, while other Gulf countries have
pledged financial support to aid the country’s recovery.
