The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United States bombed Iranian military sites after Tehran shot down an American drone, Reuters reported on Monday, citing U.S. military officials.
According to the report, U.S. Central Command said it
carried out strikes on Iranian radar and drone control facilities near the city
of Geruk and on Qeshm Island over the weekend.
The strikes came in response to Iran’s downing of a U.S.
MQ-1 Predator drone, which American officials said was operating over
international waters. The U.S. military said it targeted Iranian air defense
systems, a ground control station, and attack drones that posed threats to
regional shipping routes.
Iran acknowledged launching a retaliatory strike, while
Kuwait said its air defenses intercepted incoming drone and missile fire early
Monday.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in a statement carried by
state media, said U.S. forces had targeted infrastructure on an island and that
it had responded with an attack, without specifying the location.
The escalation highlights the fragility of a weeks-long
ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as both sides continue
negotiations to extend the truce.
Meanwhile, tensions across the region remain high, with Iran
maintaining pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global energy
supplies. At the same time, fighting has intensified elsewhere, including
continued hostilities involving Israel and Hezbollah.
U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are
ongoing and expressed optimism about reaching a deal, despite the recent
escalation.
No American casualties were reported in the latest strikes,
according to U.S. officials.
