The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations General Assembly has elected Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Nasir Ahmad Faiq, as a vice president of its 81st session.
The assembly also elected A. F. M. Abdul Momen (Khaleelur
Rahman as reported in the original statement) as president of the upcoming
session, while selecting members of the bureau for the main committees of the
General Assembly.
In a statement, Faiq said Afghanistan was pleased to be
selected as one of the vice presidents of the session and hoped to work closely
with the president-elect and member states to advance the goals and
responsibilities of the General Assembly.
According to results announced by the United Nations on
Tuesday, Bangladesh’s representative won 99 votes, defeating Cyprus candidate
Andreas S. Kakouris, who received 91 votes. A total of 190 votes were cast in a
secret ballot at UN headquarters in New York, with no abstentions recorded.
The Bangladeshi diplomat will succeed Germany’s former
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who presided over the 80th session of the
General Assembly.
The president of the UN General Assembly oversees meetings
of the 193-member body and facilitates discussions on major international
issues, but the role does not carry executive authority within the UN system.
The Bangladeshi envoy’s one-year term will begin with the
opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly in September 2026.
