The Kabul Tribune (KT) — At least 75 people have died in drowning incidents across Afghanistan since the beginning of Hamal, the first month of the solar year, a Taliban official said.
Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, spokesperson for the Taliban’s disaster preparedness authority, said three others were injured in the same incidents.
According to Hamad, the victims include 27 men, seven women and 41 children.
He urged the public to follow safety guidelines when visiting water bodies or swimming, in order to prevent further incidents and protect lives.
Drowning cases tend to rise during the spring and summer seasons due to increased river levels, lack of safety precautions and limited public awareness.
Officials say that children make up the majority of victims, often because they lack swimming skills or approach water without family supervision.
