The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United States launched a new round of military strikes on multiple targets in Iran overnight, Reuters reported, citing the U.S. military, as President Donald Trump warned of further escalation if no peace agreement is reached.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes began after midnight
in Tehran and were carried out in response to what it described as Iran’s
“continued aggression.”
Iran’s top military command warned it would target any vessel
attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian media reporting
that two ships were fired upon. However, U.S. Central Command denied that the
waterway had been closed, saying commercial shipping continued despite the
threats.
The latest strikes mark an escalation in ongoing hostilities
between the two sides, threatening to derail a fragile ceasefire reached
earlier in April.
Trump said the strikes could intensify if Iran fails to
agree to a deal, while U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the
attacks as part of efforts to strengthen both military and diplomatic leverage.
Iranian officials accused the United States of targeting
civilian infrastructure, including water facilities, and called the strikes a
violation of international law. The Pentagon did not immediately comment on the
allegations.
The conflict, now in its fourth month, has disrupted global
energy supplies and pushed oil prices higher, while diplomatic efforts
continue, including mediation talks involving Qatar in Tehran.
