The Kabul Tribune (KT) — United Nations experts have condemned the Taliban over the arrest of women for alleged dress code violations and the use of force against protesters in Herat.
According to UN experts, dozens of women were detained on June 6 and 7, 2026, prompting protests in the city, where demonstrators opposed what they described as increasingly restrictive measures.
The experts said Taliban forces allegedly used excessive force against protesters on June 9, including opening fire and beating demonstrators. At least two people, including a boy, were reported killed and more than 20 others injured.
Richard Bennett and other experts said the use of force must comply with international law, stressing it should only occur when necessary and proportionate.
They warned that detaining women over dress code violations could amount to arbitrary detention and discrimination, raising serious human rights concerns.
The experts called on the Taliban to conduct a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident and to ensure accountability for those responsible.
They also urged authorities to immediately release detainees, avoid further escalation, and respect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
The statement comes amid ongoing international concern over restrictions on women’s rights and the use of force against civilians in Afghanistan.
