The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Euronews reported that the European Parliament has approved wide-ranging changes to the European Union’s policies on returning third-country nationals residing illegally in member states.
The legislation was passed on Wednesday with 418 votes in
favor, 218 against, and 30 abstentions, according to the report.
The new rules aim to simplify and accelerate return
procedures while ensuring full respect for fundamental rights and international
law.
Under the legislation, non-EU nationals staying illegally in
member states will be required to leave immediately or within a specified
deadline. Individuals must cooperate with authorities, and those who fail to do
so or are considered at risk of absconding may face detention for up to 24 months,
with a possible six-month extension under certain conditions.
National authorities will also be permitted to conduct
investigative measures, including searches of premises and the seizure of
personal belongings and electronic devices.
The law provides for the transfer of individuals subject to
return decisions to designated return centers in third countries that comply
with human rights standards. Agreements will only be concluded with countries
that adhere to the principle of non-refoulement.
For the legislation to take effect, it must be formally
approved by the European Council and published in the EU’s official journal.
Giorgia Meloni welcomed the decision, describing it as a
“major success” and saying it would enable faster returns of individuals without
legal residency in the European Union.
