The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Israel said its military destroyed underground infrastructure used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on June 29, 2026, two days after Israel and Lebanon agreed to a U.S.-brokered security arrangement aimed at reducing hostilities along the border, Reuters reported.
According to a joint statement by Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, the operation targeted a
200-meter tunnel in the town of Majdal Zoun. Israeli officials said the United
States was informed before the operation and claimed the tunnel contained
hundreds of weapons and missile launchers.
The strike came after Israel and Lebanon agreed on a
U.S.-brokered security framework that calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal
from parts of southern Lebanon alongside the deployment of the Lebanese army.
Under the agreement, Israeli forces will temporarily remain in an expanded
security zone.
Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli military said it had also
targeted Hezbollah fighters carrying rocket-propelled grenades and struck a
rocket launcher in the Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah condemned the Israeli operations, calling them a
"flagrant" violation of the ceasefire. In a statement issued early
Monday, the group said it had so far adhered to the truce but was closely
monitoring what it described as Israeli violations and reserved the right to
defend Lebanon and its people.
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has also rejected the new
security agreement, describing it as a surrender to Israel and reaffirming that
the group would continue its armed resistance.
Netanyahu said Israeli forces would remain in the security
zone in southern Lebanon and continue operations against what he described as
Hezbollah's military infrastructure to protect Israeli communities near the
border.
The conflict, which has unfolded alongside the broader Iran
war, has displaced more than one million people in Lebanon. Hezbollah and Iran
have said the United States pledged to help end hostilities in Lebanon under a
memorandum of understanding signed two weeks earlier to conclude the wider
conflict, Reuters reported.
