The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UN-Habitat has warned that one in every two people in Afghanistan is expected to live in urban areas by 2060, highlighting the need for better planning to accommodate rapid urbanization.

In a post on X, the U.N. agency said many Afghan cities are not prepared for the expected population growth and called for greater investment in adequate and safe living environments.

UN-Habitat said prioritizing sustainable urban development would help create cities where everyone can enjoy a decent quality of life.

Afghanistan has experienced steady urban growth over the past two decades, driven by population growth, internal displacement, economic pressures and the return of migrants. U.N. agencies have repeatedly emphasized the need for improved urban planning, housing, infrastructure and basic public services to ensure cities can meet the needs of their expanding populations.
