The Kabul Tribune (KT) — More than 3,000 carats of emeralds extracted from mines in Afghanistan's Panjshir province were sold for 2.199 million Afghanis through a public auction, Taliban officials said on Tuesday.

Saifuddin Laton, spokesman for the Taliban governor in Panjshir, said 3,095 carats of emeralds were sold to domestic traders during an auction organized by the Taliban's Department of Mines and Petroleum in the province.

The sale follows another auction held on June 30, 2026, when 3,297 carats of Panjshir emeralds were sold to domestic traders for $198,370, according to Taliban officials.

Panjshir's emeralds are widely regarded as among Afghanistan's highest-quality gemstones. The Taliban have continued to market the gemstones through regular public auctions in recent years.
