The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A former member of the Khost Protection Force (KPF) was killed by unidentified gunmen in the provincial capital of Khost, local sources said.

The sources identified the victim as Nangyal, also known as Lalo, and said he was killed on July 18, 2026, in the 1,200 Families area of Khost city.

According to the sources, Nangyal had moved to the United States with his family and three brothers, who were also members of the KPF, after the collapse of the former Afghan government in August 2021. They said he returned to Khost about a week ago before being killed.

The sources added that Nangyal was originally from the Habashkhil area of Matun district in Khost province. His funeral was held on July 19, 2026, and he was buried in his native area.

Taliban officials have not yet commented on the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Khost Protection Force (KPF) was established with support from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The force was made up of local residents of Khost province and carried out specialized security operations with U.S. support during the previous Afghan government.

Reports indicate that the unit had around 7,000 members, although the exact number of intelligence and civilian personnel associated with the force was not publicly disclosed.
