The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on Sunday opened a five-day telecommunications and information technology exhibition at the Afghanistan International Exhibition Center in Kabul.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Taliban Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar and Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs Abdul Salam Hanafi described the exhibition as an important event for Afghanistan's technology and telecommunications sector, saying the Taliban aim to gradually make the country more competitive in technology.

Baradar said Afghanistan has the potential to serve as a data transit corridor linking South Asia with Central Asia.

Taliban Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Hadi Fazli said the ministry is working to expand telecommunications services to remote and underserved areas across the country.

According to Fazli, 400 telecommunications sites have become operational since 2021, while work is continuing to activate hundreds of additional sites.

The Taliban's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said the five-day exhibition is intended to support the technology and telecommunications sector, showcase achievements, promote information sharing and host a number of technology-related competitions.

Afghanistan has expanded telecommunications networks, digital services and internet infrastructure in recent years. However, many people in remote parts of the country still lack reliable access to telecommunications and internet services.
