The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Taliban authorities in Badakhshan said they have arrested a suspect who allegedly fled the scene after the killing of the province's director of information and culture earlier on Tuesday.

Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Badakhshan, said the suspect was detained following the fatal shooting of Zabihullah Amiri, the Taliban's director of information and culture for the province.

According to Kamgar, Amiri was shot dead on Tuesday, July 28, while traveling to work on the Faizabad–Baharak highway. He said the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle.

Kamgar said Amiri's security guards killed one of the attackers during the incident, while another suspect escaped the scene. Taliban authorities said that suspect has now been arrested.

Security officials said investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances of the attack, its motive and whether any additional individuals were involved.

Amiri was killed in an armed attack on Tuesday morning. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing, and authorities have not yet identified a motive.
