The Kabul Tribune (KT)— The Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold a meeting of its contact group on Afghanistan at U.N. headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly, the organization said.
The meeting will be part of a series of ministerial contact group and specialized committee meetings convened by the OIC during the General Assembly’s high-level week.
The OIC said its General Secretariat will also host the annual coordination meeting of foreign ministers from its member states at U.N. headquarters in New York.
Other contact groups scheduled to meet include those dealing with Muslim communities and minorities, regional issues in Europe, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, according to the OIC.
The organization has also repeatedly raised concerns about the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan. It has condemned restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women’s and girls’ education and employment and called for those restrictions to be lifted.
The OIC has said Afghan women and girls should have access to education and employment and be able to participate in public life.
The Afghanistan contact group was established by the OIC to help coordinate diplomatic efforts on Afghanistan and monitor the implementation of the organization’s decisions on the country.
The meetings come as the 81st U.N. General Assembly begins its high-level week in New York. The General Assembly’s general debate is scheduled for Sept. 22-26 and Sept. 28, according to the United Nations.
